From Hawaii News NOW

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Maui's Bart de Zwart, not only has a cool name, he's a big time charger. He's kite-surfed Jaws, and paddled the coast of Zambia.

Friday night, he floated in the dark, somewhere north of Oahu. This time, he's trying something no one has done before. He's on night three of his non-stop, unsupported, stand-up paddle trip from the Big Island to Kauai.

14975007_BG3

300 miles, all by himself. De Zwart left Keokea on the Big Island early Wednesday morning, stocked up with water, food, and a GPS for the five day trek. De Zwart championed the first leg of the journey in the dark. His good friend, Jimmie Hepp said, "The wind blew him so hard he thought he was going to end up in Lahaina!" Plus, he got seasick, and his paddle board flipped over several times; he only lost his camera to the ocean.

14975007_BG5

His wife, Dagmar, and his daughter, Soleil, along with Hepp rented a plane to look for de Zwart on Thursday, off the coast of Maui. You can check out the photos in the video on this page.

14975007_BG1

De Zwart passed through the Kaiwi Channel around 2:30 p.m. Friday, then passed the North Shore of Oahu later that evening.

14975007_BG2

But, how does he sleep? Hepp told me de Zwart sleeps in a wet suit on top of a blow up mattress. He explained, "It's some sort of a specially made air mattress with sides and stuff to it to help keep him dry. It's attached to this board, which is 14 feet by 28 inches. And he sleeps in it and he stays dry."

But, why would de Zwart try this? He posted this on his blog: "The answer is simple. I think, sometimes it is good to do something difficult and hard, in order to appreciate life, people, food and all the things around we often take for granted."

De Zwart should reach Kauai by Sunday. His wife will be waiting with fresh food and a change of clothes.

Hundreds of stand-up paddlers expected on Waikiki surf for Battle of the Paddle Hawaii

PaddlePost1

Stand-up paddle surfing — now surfacing as a competitive global sport — had its mellow start right here in Hawaii.

In decades past, Waikiki beach boys took to using outrigger paddles to catch smaller waves on longboards. Surfing instructors, drifting on their boards, also took to using the paddle for quick access to bobbing student surfers and to steady themselves while snapping souvenir photos for visitors.

This weekend, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sat., May 14, and Sun., May 15, the easygoing paddler’s vibe will be swapped for adrenaline-charged athleticism as hundreds of competitors line the Wakiki area shoreline for the Rainbow Sandals Gerry Lopez Battle of the Paddle Hawaii. (Gerry Lopez, for those unfamiliar, is a surfing icon who grew up on Oahu).

PaddlePost2

Battle of the Paddle Hawaii’s main event is a five-mile elite race, offering the sport’s largest cash purse, $25,000. The race will feature competitors riding boards no longer than 12-feet 6-inches, completing three laps around an offshore course. Each lap will include an exchange area where racers must beach their boards for a short run around a flagged course. The contest will get under way at 2 p.m., Saturday, along Duke Kahanamoku Beach, edging Fort De Russy Beach Park. An awards ceremony for the event will follow at 4 p.m.

PaddlePost4

Battle of the Paddle Hawaii will also feature an open age-group race, kids’ races, stand-up paddle team relays, and a distance race dubbed Hawaii Kai Run. Last year’s Hawaii Kai Run drew the largest-ever field assembled in Hawaii — more than 230 paddlers—working their way from Maunalua Bay, in the east Oahu suburb of Hawaii Kai, all the way to Waikiki. The Hawaii Kai Run will start at 11 a.m., Sunday, in Maunalua Bay. Kids’ races and team relays will follow, at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.

The open age-group race is slated for 11 a.m., Saturday. Battle of the Paddle organizers say last year’s inaugural Hawaii competition drew more than 600 paddlers from around the world and lots more spectators.

Can’t get to Waikiki beach? No worries. Battle of the Paddle events will be aired on a live webcast at www.BattleOfThePaddle.com.

Don’t know the first thing about stand-up paddle surfing? Check out Battle of the Paddle’s beach expo, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., both days. Water sports experts will be on hand to talk about paddling and gear. There will also be demonstrations and Na Kama Kai Ocean Clinics will start each hour, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., both days.

Defending champion Danny Ching is eager to take on friends as well as all challengers in the Battle of the Paddle

By Cindy Luis

20110513_spt7paddle

COURTESY BILL BYRNE

Danny Ching won last year’s inaugural stand-up paddleboard race by 13 seconds over training buddy Travis Grant, who led until the final buoy of the 5-mile event.

Any day on the water is a good day. Add a couple of friends, and it's an instant party.

Add a couple hundred friends and it's how Danny Ching intends to celebrate turning 28 tomorrow — by challenging himself and all-comers in the second Rainbow Sandals Gerry Lopez Battle of the Paddle.

Last June, Ching won the inaugural stand-up paddleboard event off Duke Kahanamoku Beach by 13 seconds over training buddy and good friend Travis Grant of Australia. Grant led until the final buoy of the 5-mile elite race, an event that included 19 buoy turns over four laps with two 75-yard beach sprints.

"I'm pretty stoked to see a bunch of good friends," Ching said. "This race is so awesome. I know how hard the guys from Rainbow work at putting it on.

"I'm pleasantly surprised how much I like SUP — my favorite is still outrigger paddling — and I've been surprised how successful I've been."

Ching grew up in Redondo Beach, Calif., paddling for Lanakila Outrigger, the club founded by his father, Al, in 1970. His life is, and has always been, immersed in water: The former member of the U.S. Olympic Canoe/Kayak Team is in his fifth year as the Lanakila men's coach; is a lifeguard instructor for the Los Angeles County junior lifeguard program; and started 404 Paddlesurf 16 months ago, a company that designs and tests stand-up paddleboards.

Ching said he was tricked into his first SUP race.

"A buddy talked me into it," he said. "When I told him I don't paddle stand-up, he told me to just show up for the race, that I could do the outrigger long course but that I'd get to paddle more if I also did the stand-up race. Told him I'd give it a try."

He found success immediately and has been unbeaten in Battle of the Paddle events, three in California and last year in Waikiki. Ching said his favorite part is the perspective from a stand-up board as opposed to being in a canoe.

"You get to see some awesome stuff," he said. "Turtles, dolphins, blue whales, sharks. And I got hit by malolo (flying fish)."

But it's usually Ching who packs the biggest punch in a race.

"You're not going to track him down if he gets in front of you," said Grant, who's also made a successful transition from outrigger to SUP. "It's not easy to beat him. He's been on fire.

"As for this race, the same guys will be out in front. The surf throws in another element. Guys got wiped out last year and it could happen again. Flat is boring and the water here is undulating, it has a different vibe. There's so many good paddlers. It's going to be hard to be in the top 20."

Candice Appleby has been No. 1 in the past two Battle of the Paddles, last June here and California last October.

"There's going to be a lot of good competition here," said the University of Hawaii graduate, who was raised in San Clemente, Calif. "Heather Baus from Puerto Rico, there's a world champion kayaker named Krisztina Zur and a number of young girls who are up-and-coming.

"Winning in both places has been exciting. But in Hawaii, you have the cultural aspects. You feel the presence of Duke Kahanamoku. The sport comes full-circle when coming to Hawaii."

Stand Up Paddling with Man’s Best Friend

IMG_4395

Fort Lauderdale’s Paddles and Boards is attracting many dog owners to stand up paddle boarding. Taking your dog for a walk has a whole new meaning at George English Park. People and pooches are now walking on water.

Masha took her 5 month old little “Dude” for his first paddle board introduction last week. Dude looked pretty stoked… for a beginner basset hound.

IMG_9243

Sup (Stand up Paddling) is very versatile and you can enjoy the sport with or without waves.  Pet owners can now experience all the health benefits that this new activity provides and  they can bring along their pets for the ride. It’s just another great reason why Paddle Boarding is the fastest growing water sport in the world.

Paddle Boarding - Leisure Activity Or Extreme Sport?

Saturday, 05 February 2011 Category Paddle Boarding News 0 Comments

Historians would suggest, that stand-up paddle boarding could be traced back to the islands within the Polynesian triangle; with its strong Hawaiian heritage this new sport is rapidly gaining popularity. Indigenous tribes would have been seen paddling in hollowed-out logs and tree trunks. Today, the logs are lightweight, colorful and shiny!

Who are those people you've seen in the middle of lakes and on our shorelines, who appear to be walking on water? They are people just like you, however they are the fortunate pioneers who have discovered this versatile activity. Paddle boarding can be considered a sport if you choose to "ride" the waves or put some muscle into getting some speed or a leisure activity if you choose to stroll through winding canals as if you were taking a walk or a bike ride through a neighborhood with streets of water. This is an activity that can be experienced alone or as a social experience with friends or family.

This is a sport for everyone - not just those radical gen-x'ers. Paddle boarding is for people who never considered "surfing" or for those who have made surfing their way of life.

The first time you stand on a paddleboard "on" the water you feel completely empowered and have the urge to just GO. The designs of the boards make them so stable that they absorb the "wave action". All you need is a 15-minute introduction to the various strokes, which will then allow you to move through the water easily and with confidence. Within an hour or so you feel as though you have "mastered" the cruise and are ready for some "waves."

Mr. Laird

I have been asked on several occasions, "what does it feel like?" The "buzz" resembles the blissful state a child experiences after riding their bicycle for the first time without training wheels and "not falling off." It is at that moment that you realize that you have discovered a way to enjoy exercise while spending time in the beautiful outdoors and having fun either alone or with others. Many newbie's find themselves daydreaming as if they were chief tribal warriors in the islands of Polynesia centuries ago. It's a trip!

Every time I'm out on a board, curious onlookers shout out..."what is that?" "Is it hard?" "Must be a great workout!" "Where can I get a board like that?" Paddle boarding is versatile, FUN, relaxing and a great workout! Anyone can do it and quite frankly, it's sexy!

Paddle Boarding - It's Going to Be Big!

Saturday, 05 February 2011 Category Paddle Boarding News 1 Comment

It's like yoga on water. Wow!

An exciting new sport called stand up Paddle Boarding has emerged as THE sport for celebrities and everyday fitness enthusiasts alike. It's fun and as a bonus, it's a great fitness program. Celebrities like Jennifer Anniston, Matthew McConaughey and Pierce Brosnan have been caught-on-tape practicing this new sport while grinning from ear to ear.

It is a growing trend still its infancy, but expected to hit critical mass within the next couple of years. The sport is rapidly gaining momentum and has become a complimentary sport for surfers. It's origin is believed to have come from Polynesia and later popularized in Hawaii. I'm not sure about all that, but I do feel a little tribal when I'm doing it!

The beauty of this sport is that even when the waves are small, paddle boarding is still a whole lot of fun. Since the boards are longer and wider than surf boards you can surf large and small waves alike - for a much longer ride. This Hawaiian craze can be practiced on flat water, rivers and streams, or on the ocean.

As you slowly paddle along, gazing at all your surroundings, you can't help but sense a feeling of "being", while all the muscles in your body are worked - especially your core. Paddle Boarding is not only a complete fitness program but a relaxing and fulfilling outdoor activity that can be enjoyed regardless of whether you are 7 or 70 years old!

Try it; you will fall in love within the first 5 minutes!
